Născut
pe 6 ianuarie 1881, în regiunea Tver, Noul Martir Alexis Constantinovich
Benemanskii a fost preot în dioceza Tver, Rusia, la începutul anilor 1900. El
s-a opus hotărât Bisericii Vii, care a fost organizată în 1920 de către Statul
Sovietic, cu scopul de a provoca şi contesta legitimitatea Patriarhatului de la
Moscova şi pe Sfântul Tihon, Patriarhul însuşi al Bisericii Ruse. Părintele
Alexis a fost neobosit în apărarea Bisericii canonice împotriva
“renovaţioniştilor” şi nu şi-a sacrificat principiile. De-a lungul anilor,
Părintele Alexis a fost arestat de patru ori, întemniţat şi exilat.
Pe
21 noiembrie (4 decembrie) 1937, a fost din nou arestat, împreună cu preotul Elias Gromoglasov, şi a fost supus
martiriului a doua zi, sub falsa acuzaţia că a luat parte la acţiuni
contra-revoluţionare, organizate de Arhiepiscopul Thaddeus din Tver, Noul
Martir, care fusese arestat trei zile mai înainte şi apoi martirizat.
Părintele
Alexis a fost canonizat Dioceza din Tver
în anul 1999 şi a fost trecut în rândul noilor Martiri şi Mărturisitori
de sub jugul sovietic, de către Biserica Ortodoxă Rusă în anul 2000.

Born
January 6, 1881 in the Tver region, the New Martyr Alexis Constantinovich
Benemanskii was a priest of the Diocese of Tver, Russia,
during the early 1900s. He widely opposed the Living
Church, which had been set up in the
1920s by the Soviet state to challenge the legitimacy of the Patriarchate of Moscow and, initially,
Saint Tikhon himself. He was tenacious in defending the canonical Church
against the "renovationists," as proponents of the Living Church
were called, and was unwilling to sacrifice his principles. Over the years, he
had been arrested four times and imprisoned or exiled.
On
December 4/November 21, 1937, he was arrested again, together with his coworker
Archpriest Elias Gromoglasov, and martyred the following day, having been
accused of taking part in fictitious counter-revolutionary activities allegedly
organized by the New Martyr Archbishop Thaddeus of Tver, who was arrested three
days later and subsequently martyred. He was canonized by the Diocese of Tver
in 1999 and was numbered among those glorified as new martyrs and confessors of
the Soviet Yoke by the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000.
