Postul este cel mai bun străjer al sufletului

 

"De asta are creştinul proba postului, să înveţe să se înfrâneze,

să mute atenţia de la bunătăţile materiale pe bunătăţile spirituale.  

Să deschidă poarta cerului şi a sufletului cu cheia rugăciunii."

«  - Cât de important este postul pentru evoluţia creştinului ?

 - Sfântul Vasile cel Mare zice : « Postul este cel mai bun străjer al sufletului, cel mai sigur tovarăş al  corpului, arma vitejilor, întărirea atleţilor. El alungă spiritele, îndeamnă la pietate, face a iubi înfrânarea, inspiră modestie, dă curaj în război  şi te învaţă a iubi pacea. Postul dă aripi rugăciunii pentru a se înălţa  şi a pătrunde în ceruri. Postul este sprijinul caselor, parintele sănătăţii, povăţuitorul tinerimii, podoaba bătrânilor, plăcutul tovarăş al călătorilor, amicul sigur al soţilor ». Dacă le ai pe toate acestea prin post ce-ţi mai trebuie altceva ? Dacă renunţi la post e ca şi cum te-ai dezarma singur. Dacă un tânăr învaţă de la  părinte să se abţină azi de la carne şi de la mâncăruri de dulce, mâine va învăţa sa se abţină de la droguri, de la tutun, de la alcool. Lecţia abţinerilor, a interdicţiilor care  salvează trupul şi sufletul la un moment dat, ajută pe om să treacă peste multe ispite, peste multe necazuri. Spui azi :  Ei, copilul e şcolar, nu-l postesc, ca să poată învăţa carte ! E o greşeală, carte înveţi şi dacă mănânci  fructe, legume, pâine...Ba mintea e mai  liberă, trupul e mai liber, poate să facă un efort mai mare. »

Că zicea şi un Sfânt Părinte că acel care se domină pe sine îi domină şi pe ceilalţi şi o face cu înţelepciunea duhului şi a minţii. Omul  se priveşte superficial pe sine, e gata întotdeauna să cedeze primului impuls în tot ce face, fără să se sfătuiască cu îngerul său, fără să se raporteze la harul cu care a fost îndumnezeit. Oamenii care nu au încredere în ei înşişi pierd uşor şi încrederea în Dumnezeu... Iar relaţia cu Dumnezeu se stabileşte printr-o temeinică cunoaştere a sinelui, printr-o relaţie de iubire cu aproapele. Numai iubindu-l  pe aproapele îl poţi cunoaşte. Că nimeni nu se deschide spre cel de alături dacă nu simte că este iubit. Aşa şi Dumnezeu, numai dacă Îl iubeşti poţi să Îl cunoşti, se lasă văzut...

Spune, de altfel, şi Sfântul Maxim Mărturisitorul :

« Iubirea de Dumnezeu este tendinţa virtuoasă a sufletului, iar cel ce o are nu doreşte nimic din lucrurile create, mai presus de iubirea lui Dumnezeu. Cu toate acestea, este cu neputinţă să păstrezi o astfel de iubire dacă simţi cea mai mică  aplecare spre lucrurile lumeşti. Cel ce Îl iubeşte pe Dumnezeu duce o viaţă îngerească pe pământ. El posteşte, veghează, se roagă şi are tot gândul bun pentru semenul său. »

 - «  The fasting is the best guardian of the soul – says St. Basil the Great . It is the best comrade of the body, the weapon of the braves, the power of the athletes. The fasting chases away the evil  spirits, impels to piety, makes you  love  restrain, inspires modesty, gives courage in battle and teaches you to love peace. The fasting gives wings to the prayer to rise and enter the Heaven. The fasting is the help of the households, the father of health, the adviser of the youth, the adornment of the elder, the pleasant companion of the traveller, the trustworthy friend of the spouses ». If you have all these by fasting, why would you need anything else ? If you give up fasting it is as you will disarm yourself. If a young man learns today from his father to abstrain from meat and from all sorts of food, tomorrow he will learn to abstrain from drugs, from smoking, from alchool. The lesson of restraints, of prohibitions which save the body and the soul some moment in time, helps a person to surpass many temptations, many hardships. Today you are saying : Oh, the child is just a pupil, I don’t put him to fast so that he could learn easier ! It is a mistake, you can learn even if you eat fruits, vegetables, bread...On the contrary, the mind is more free, the body is more free, it can do a greater effort. »

“That’s why the Christian has the fasting test, to learn to restrain himself, to move his attention from the material to spiritual goods, to open the gate of Heaven and of his soul with the key of prayer. A Holy Father of the Church said that who can govern himself, he  can govern the others, and he will do it with the entire wisdom of hid mind and his spirit. Man consider himself superficialy, he is always ready to give up to the first impulse in his actions, without asking his angel for advice, without reminding of the grace with which he was made God. People which don’t trust themselves lose easily their trust in God…And the relationship with God is built by a solid knowledge of oneself, by a loving relationship with one’s neighbour. Only by loving your neighbour you can know him. Because no one opens his heart if he doesn’t feel himself loved. God as well lets Himself seen only if you love Him, and just  by loving Him you may know Him…

Saint Maxim the Confessor:

“The love for mankind is the virtuos tendency of the soul, and he who has it doesn’t desire anything of the created world more then he desires God. It is impossible to keep such a love if you feel the slightest tendency to have earthly things. He who loves God leeds an angelic life on earth. He is fasting, praying, vigiles and has only good thoughts for his neighbour.”
