Listen to Moses and the prophets! Ascultaţi pe Moise şi profeţii!

“Understanding the firm answer of Abraham to his first request, the sinner calls now  his other question. And ne said: ”Please, father,  send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, to tell them all these, so that they won’t come in this place of torment.” Where did he found so much mercy for others, so much concern for their salvation? This isn’t mercy, but  an attempt to easy his pain, as little as he can. But it is shown now another of his sins: causing another to sin. He didn’t come to hell only for his lack of mercy towards Lazarus, but for leading a life which was a bad example to the others, causing their perdition, opening their road to hell. To be the cause to sin of the others is an awful sin. To drag others with you in your fall is more condamnable than falling alone. Hear what frightful words says the Lord about the one who causes another to sin: "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. “(Luke 17, 2). It seems that the brothers of this rich man were younger than him, so that he wanted that Lazarus came and forgave him first, and then he would rectify/mend his sin to his brothers. So the flames would mitigate, the torment would ease. Therefore the appeal to Abraham was in his own advantage, not for his brothers. And Abraham said:  “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.  And he said, `No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'  He said to him, `If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.' This request can’t be fulfilled. Abraham gave him an unshattered explanation : What’s the use of sending Lazarus back to the earth to announce the people what expects them after the death, if they had been told clearly through Moses and the prophets what they had to do to save their souls? Thousands and thousands of people had saved their souls not through the testimony of the dead, but through the living’s testimony. If so many people saved themselves listening to Moses and the prophets, let his brothers do the same.”(Saint Nikolai Velimirovici)

„Înţelegând răspunsul fără împotrivire al lui Avraam la prima lui cerere, păcătosul şi-o strigă acum pe cealaltă. Iar el a zis: „Rogu-te dar, părinte, să-l trimiţi în casa tatălui meu, căci am cinci fraţi, să le spună lor acestea, ca să nu vină şi ei în acest loc de chin”. De unde deodată atâta milă de alţii, atâta grijă pentru mântuirea lor? Nu este milă, ci încă o încercare de a-şi uşura, cât de puţin, chinul. Dar acum ni se arată un alt păcat al său: smintirea. Nu numai pentru nemilostivirea către Lazăr a ajuns el în iad, ci şi fiindcă, prin viaţa sa uşuratică, s-a făcut altora pildă rea, pricinuindu-le pierzarea, deschizându-le drumul spre iad. Să te faci altora pricină de sminteală, este un păcat grozav. A trage după tine în cădere pe alţii este mai de osândă decât a cădea singur. Auziţi ce înfricoşătoare cuvinte spune Domnul despre cei ce smintesc pe alţii: „Mai de folos i-ar fi dacă i s-ar lega de gât o piatră de moară şi ar fi aruncat în mare, decât să smintească pe unul din aceştia mici” (Luca 17, 2). Se pare că fraţii acestui bogat erau mai tineri decât el, încât el voia întâi ca Lazăr să vină la el şi să-l ierte, apoi să-şi îndrepte şi păcatul faţă de fraţii lui. Astfel flăcările s-ar mai fi domolit, chinul i s-ar mai fi uşurat. Rugămintea făcută lui Avraam era, aşadar, mai mult pentru sine decât pentru fraţi. Şi i-a zis Avraam: „Au pe Moise şi pe prooroci; să asculte de ei. Iar el a zis: Nu, părinte Avraam, ci, dacă cineva dintre morţi se va duce la ei, se vor pocăi. Şi i-a zis Avraam: Dacă nu ascultă de Moise şi de prooroci, nu vor crede nici dacă ar învia cineva dintre morţi”. Nici această cerere nu-i poate fi împlinită. Avraam îi dă o lămurire de nezdruncinat. La ce bun să-l trimiţi pe Lazăr înapoi pe pământ ca să-i înştiinţeze pe oameni ce-i aşteaptă după moarte, dacă li s-a grăit cât se poate de desluşit prin Moise şi prin prooroci ce trebuie să facă spre a se mântui? Mii şi mii de oameni s-au mântuit nu prin mărturia celor morţi, ci prin mărturia celor vii. Dacă atâţia s-au mântuit prin ascultarea de Moise şi de prooroci, să facă şi fraţii tăi la fel.”(Sfântul Nicolae Velimirovici)
